IDEA-24348 JBoss Rules (Drools) Support
117
Issue is visible to: All Users
The issue is visible to the selected user group only
Currently there is no JBoss Rules (Drools) support in IDEA. At least minimal JBoss Rules support in IDEA would be valuable to us, since the majority of our business logic is encoded in JBoss Rules. Currently we are forced to use a mish-mash of buggy tools to get it done (including gulp Eclipse), and consequently our rules are a mess.

http://jboss.org/drools/

Minimal Support:
- syntax highlighting
  • file structure tree, including functions and rules

Nice To Have:
  • Java code completion and suggestions inside *.drl files

Cadillac Convertible:
  • step-through with debugger
  • JBoss Rules code completion and suggestions
  • testing and coverage integration support

Another nice to have feature would be graphical editing of Drools Flow (v5.0 and upward) process files.

At least if full syntax highlighting and java click-through were supported then simple rule editing would be much better. Agree that debugger could come later if we could get this sooner. We are trying to figure out whether we allow 2 IDEs or if we should move the department to Eclipse.

As far as I know, there is a very good Drools plugin available for the Eclipse IDE. I'm not so sure about the architectural differences between Eclipse and IDEA, but I assume that both share similar concepts for extensions (plugins, GUI hooks, ...). Wouldn't it be a favourable approach to factor out the parts of the existing Drools plugins for Eclipse which could be common for both IDEs, and only wrap them in IDE-specific constucts to meet the required extension point APIs of each IDE?

I heard some rumors a while ago that there's even a standardization effort underway to unify extension point APIs between IDEs, maybe this could also help if it is already mature enough and both Eclipse and IDEA support it.

@Michael Neale: who's the best contact person of the Drools project to discuss this with? Who has the most intimate knowledge of the existing Drools tooling inside Eclipse? Let's bring this person and his followers in contact with Sergey Vasiliev@jetbrains

Isn't it easy for you Jetbrains guys to convert the known grammar of drools with your MPS into a first drools support? Thanks, Leif

Yes please because IDEA is the best IDE tool ever. But the support for DRL files with possible code completion is something I'm waiting for a LONG time. Please add it.
